The gracious people of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program and Birds Eye sent me a sample of Birds Eye Chef’s Favorites to try last week. Included in the sample were the Lightly Sauced Creamed Spinach, Creamy Primavera Risotto, Roasted Red Potatoes & Green Beans, and Mushroom & Green Bean Risotto. These dishes are all steam fresh and ready to serve within minutes.
I decided to try the Creamy Primavera Risotto and Roasted Red Potatoes & Green Beans first.
Per package directions, I microwaved the risotto for 4 minutes and the roasted red potatoes & green beans for 5 1/2 minutes. After letting them cool for 1 minutes in the bag, here were the finished products:
The risotto had a great texture and good flavor. It’s a very colorful dish and would be a great way to sneak in some vegetables for a picky eater. My friend that tried it said she would definitely buy it again and that she couldn’t tell it was frozen. Each bag contained 2 servings of 2/3 cup each. Each serving was 180 calories, 3.5 g fat, 32 g carbohydrates (2 g of fiber), and 4 g protein. We were able to make 3 servings out of the bag since it was served as a side. The nutritional stats are pretty good considering how creamy and delicious it was!
The green beans and potatoes also had a great texture and seemed liked they were cooked on the stove and not the microwave. We both thought it could use a little salt, but preferred that it wasn’t already added so we could add to our own preference at the table. There were 2 servings at 1 cup each per bag. Each serving contained 120 calories, 2.5 g fat, 20 g carbohydrates (3 g fiber), and 3 g protein – again, another winner nutritionally!
Both of these products tasted great and I will definitely buy them when they hit stores in September. I served these as side dishes with blackened chicken (recipe to come).
You could use these as a side dish to basically any protein – I think it would be great with tilapia or salmon. Looking forward to trying the other products.
